This is a fantastic book!!! It is so well done, with illustrations of the original source materials (excerpts from the diaries, wills, inventories, etc.) as well as drawings, cutouts and silhouettes and portraits, and detailed information provided by the author. This is not only a fascinating family record, it is also prime information about daily life in the Georgian era. Mr. Rendell is to be commended for the readability of this book-it is clear, full of detail and explanation, and still a delightful read. Mr. Rendell's humor and his affection for his subject add to the reader's pleasure. This is a must-read for anyone who enjoys history, and an invaluable reference for a historian or historical fiction author.Product details

This is an interesting, well-written text, impeccably researched. Using the journals left behind by his ancestor, the author examines the life of a successful tradesman in Georgian England. He broadens and expands the reader's understanding of everyday life and culture in the 18th century. Highly recommend.
I have been a fan of Mike Rendell's blog for a while. The book is just as delightful. It's an amazing insight into everyday life in the 18th Century using his ancestor's journal. What could be a more accurate account?

I have ancestors that lived a few blocks from Rendell's relative and I learned so much of what their life was like in 18th century London through this insightful book. It was very interesting, and painted a fascinating picture of of the Georgian period. I am indebted to him for sharing his memorabilia, pictures, and journal with us, as nothing of my family had been passed on to me.
