The Keystone Kid had come all the way from Pennsylvania to be a cowboy, and stepped off the train dressed to the teeth in an atrocious freshly bought Western outfit. It was no surprise to anyone when he almost instantly became the butt of some unpleasant jokes in the local bar.
What was surprising was that he made no attempt to fight back against the bully who had decided to make a show of it. He gained two things that day - his name, the "Keystone Kid," and his reputation as a coward. The Kid made one friend, though, who helped him learn the ropes - horses and cattle, the way the ranch was really run - and he soon took on the look and ways of a true cowhand.
But there was still that sore point of his cowardice. No one could help the Kid with that. When the time finally came to prove himself, he had to stand alone...and his life depended on it.

There is a word to describe this story. Superb. Imagine if you will a young man from Pennsylvania, getting ripped off by a wild west show cowboy that sells him a bright yellow shirt with red fringes, brand spanking new pants and a non western type hat. He hits the saloon and the town bully makes mass fun of him and then beats him to a pulp. A disabled cowhand, now the cook, takes pity on him and takes him on as assistant cook. The book goes on for over two years and little by little the Keystone kid becomes a good cook and learns how to rope, mow, brand, and handle cattle. I especially liked the detail of how to use a lasso, break a half wild horse and make hay in the era. The characters are great, the book is great, you just have to buy it. I noted this book is about as high a rated book as one could get. Others must have liked the slow, informative words of wisdom by the cook. We never did learn what was in the valise...shuProduct details

The Keystone Kid A Frank Roderus Western edition by Frank Roderus Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
GOOD story line but WAY too much about nothing in between the real story. Some parts drag on forever and your tend to lose interest in the book. At times it was hard to keep going with reading.
Perhaps the best Roderus offering I have read. Excellent. It painted a realistic picture of ranching. It was a human story not a modern dime novel which many western genre tend to be. I enjoyed the third party narration technique. Good Job Frank.
This is not a story full of gun fights, cussing, women or violence. If you want an easy read about ranch life and the every day struggle of living, the Keystone Kid is it. Old time cowboys doing their job, and Frank Roderus makes it exciting.
Wanna live on a cattle ranch in the best of times? Up before the sun, have a steaming coffee and a good smoke on the porch. Ride and rope. Smell the horses, castrate the cows, taste the Rocky mountain oysters, eat a mountain of flap jacks and lose a few teeth in a friendly fight.
And not a politically correct notion in sight.
I have began reading Frank Roderus books, and have really liked his style of writing, and his way of developing character.
Only thing I would say in the negative would be the endings. You wait the whole book to see the good guy get the girl and ride away into the sunset, then when you get there, Roderus may allot a whole paragraph to that affect. I hope he wrote a few series with same characters, so once I could see the real end to a well developed western.
I enjoyed it but I did a lot of skim reading as for me there was too much descriptive info I didn't need to know. I picture the Keystone duded up to look like Howdie Doodie! I don't know why but that was the first character that popped in my mind when I read the description. It was love for this kid at first site! His trials or trails at becoming a cowboy (his dream life) and the cook who took the Kid under his wing and the surprise ending. Not a bad read.
I grew up on a cattle ranch, and have fond memories of working with horses, cattle, and the unique brand of men associated with the ranching business. Frank Roderus has captured the true spirit of the old ways and how we did it, right down to the Rocky Mountain oysters. My grandfather used to toss a few on the hot coals of the branding fire until they popped open and were ready to eat. My older brother and I munched them with relish as the old cowhands smiled their approval. I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it to anyone who wants to get a true picture of the life of a cowhand.
